Katsumi Kuramochi

Sensei Katsumi Kuramochi joined us from January 1997 untill June 1997, at the time he was Godan Kendo. In addition to Kendo he also instructed us in Iaido.

He was the 1996 Australian Open Kendo Champion and now instructs in Cairns in North Queensland. Currently 6 Dan Kendo, 5 Dan Iaido, 4 Dan Jodo.

Takashi Itakura

Sensei Itakura previously had been instructing at UOWKC on a regular basis for several years and became a member in 2009. Graded to Rokudan, Kyoto Japan, 2010. Left for Melbourne mid 2011.


David Dingelstad

Commenced the study of Kendo with UOWKC in 1993, he graded to Kendo 1st kyu in Sydney in August 2004. As of 2009 he is an iaido student with the Sydney Iaido club dojo and has achieved shodan in Iaido (canberra, June 2009) and shodan in Kendo (Picton, January 2010).

Kendo Highlights -
1996 - As a member of the 'Wollongong Wookies' representing the University of Wollongong at the 1996 intervarsity kendo championship held in Canberra. He won third place in the kyu grade individual event there.
2000 - Runner up in the kyu grade individual event of the Australian Kendo Foundation International Open Tournament

Stuart Owens

A student of Kendo, Iaido and Jodo - based on the central coast, trains in multiple dojo including Wollongong. Currently a member of the Sydney Iaido Club. 1st Dan Kendo (Northumberland, UK, 1977), 2nd Dan Jodo, (Melbourne, January 2011), 2nd Dan Iaido (Stevenage, UK, August 2011). 2012 National Iaido and Jodo Championships, winner 1-2 Dan individual Jodo Championship



Klara Lantay

Iaido and Jodo student - based on the central coast, trains in multiple dojo including Wollongong. Currently a member of the Sydney Iaido Club. 2 Dan Jodo, (Canberra, June 2011), 2 Dan Iaido (Sydney, January 2012).



Bosko Erak

Iaido only member, 3rd Dan Iaido (Melbourne, January 2011). Moved to Perth mid 2011.

Andrew Whitehead

A long term friend of the Wollongong Club, Andrew has been training with us regularly since 2004, assisting in our Iaido training. He holds a Sandan in Kendo, Nidan in Seitei Iaido, and is also graded in Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu, Aikido and in Naginata, 1st Kyu Seitei Jodo.

David Boleyn

Begining Kendo in the second half of 1996, he had prior experience in western recreation (metal weapons) fighting. He graded to 5th kyu in February 1997 and trained at irregular intervals for the next few years.

Kendo Highlights -
1996 - Going into armour, mid November, fighting in his first tournament two weeks later at the NSW State Championships, and being a member of the silver medal winning Wollongong team.

Mitchell Kelly

The clubs 2003 President, 2001 and 2002 Vice President. Mitch commenced training in Kendo 2000, currently a Kendo 1st Dan (Sydney August 2003). He was the only kyu grade representing the NSWKA at the 2001 national championships in Perth

Rick Pedley-Smith

Commenced the study of Kendo under Kirby Smith at Charles Sturt University, he came to us at the start of 1997. Graded to Nidan. While training in Wollonong he also studied under Andrew Melito, and shared the tameshigiri aspects of that training with the dojo. Left(2002/2003) on a working trip to England and North America.

Dom Holloway

Commenced the study of Kendo in 1994, he graded to 4th kyu in Sydney in February 1997.

1996 - As a member of the 'Wollongong Wookies' representing the University of Wollongong at the 1996 intervarsity kendo championship held in Canberra. In the teams event he fought Jonathan Cross (then a sandan)of Adelaide and held him to a one-all draw.

Shihoko Steinke

A Japanese kendo ni-dan who joined us in May 1997, Shihoko assisted with training beginners.

Il-su Do

Il-su began the study of Kendo in 1994 after on coming to the University of Wollongong,he reached the level of 5th kyu in Australia before winning a scholarship for a year in Japan as a language student, in which time he reached the grade of Shodan in 1996, prior to returning to Wollongong. In early 1997 he left us to study in Sydney.

Commenced the study of Kendo in 1998, a Japanese Language student at the University of Wollongong and our 1998 and 1999 President.
